DIGITAL RESOURCE HUB

About This Project

Just A Pale Blue Dot’s Digital Resource Hub was created in response to local residents who shared that most existing guides in their area feel confusing, too broad, or not specific to Central Contra Costa County.

This page brings together trusted local tools, current rules, and nearby donation and drop‑off options so you have one place to check every sustainability need.

The hub will be updated over time based on community feedback and changes in local programs, so it can grow with what neighbors actually need and use. Bookmark this page and keep it handy as an everyday reference for your household.

Contra Costa Sustainability Help Hub

Use this hub to quickly find out where items go, how to recycle locally, and where to donate or drop things off in Contra Costa County.

I don’t know where this item goes I want to donate or drop something off
Step 1

Use a Quick “Where Does This Go?” Tool

StopWaste Recycling Guide – Type your item and zip code to see if it’s recycling, compost, landfill, or a special drop‑off.

Open the StopWaste guide ↗

Step 2

Text “Hello Recycling Bin”

If you live in RecycleSmart’s service area, text “Hello Recycling Bin” to (925) 940‑5795 for on‑demand sorting help (for example: “milk carton”).

Step 3

Check the Residential Service Guide

For detailed rules and visuals on what goes in each cart, see the RecycleSmart residential service guide.

Plastic Bags & Film

What To Do With Soft Plastics

These do NOT go in your blue recycling cart.

Common “soft plastics” include:

  • Grocery and shopping bags
  • Plastic mailers and shipping envelopes (no paper labels if possible)
  • Ziploc‑style bags and produce bags
  • Bubble wrap, air pillows, and cereal box liners

If they are clean, dry, and labeled with #2 or #4, they usually belong at a store drop‑off bin instead of curbside recycling.

Check plasticfilmrecycling.org for nearby drop‑off locations ↗

In Central Contra Costa, many Safeway and Target stores have plastic bag/film collection bins (for example: Lafayette, Pleasant Hill – Patterson Blvd, and several Walnut Creek locations). Always confirm at the store or online before dropping off.
